FIVE SUPERVISORS OF ELECTIONS FROM WEST CENTRAL FLORIDA LAUNCH STATEWIDE GET OUT THE VOTE (GOTV) CAMPAIGN

TAMPA , Fla. , February 21, 2006 – Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections Buddy Johnson and five other West Central Florida Supervisors of Elections today announced the kickoff of a statewide "Get Out The Vote" (GOTV) initiative.  The press conference, held at Hillsborough County ’s Robert L. Gilder Elections Services Center near Brandon , was one of a series of simultaneous events sponsored by the Florida State Association of Supervisors of Elections (FSASE). The other Supervisors of Elections attending were:

  • Kurt S. Browning, Supervisor of Elections, Pasco County
  • Deborah Clark, Supervisor of Elections, Pinellas County
  • Kathy Dent, Supervisor of Elections, Sarasota County
  • Karen Krauss, Supervisor of Elections, Sumter County

The 2006 GOTV programs encourages Floridians to register, update their voter records, volunteer as poll workers and vote in the primary and general elections. The statewide

GOTV plan is designed to allow each county to adapt their voter education plans to their own needs based on a calendar of themed months.

  • March Register at Work Month
  • April    Register at School Month
  • May    Register at you Local Merchants Month
  • June    Register at your House of Worship Month
  • July     Register Online Month

Buddy Johnson said that his office is actively recruiting companies, schools, houses of worship, and community organizations throughout Hillsborough County to assist in this effort.  He recognized several of these Partners in Democracy attending the press conference, including:

  • League of Women Voters
  • Hillsborough County African American Affairs
  • Hillsborough County ADA Affairs
  • NAACP
  • Hillsborough County Hispanic Affairs
  • Hillsborough County Asian American Affairs
  • ACLU West Central Florida
  • Democratic Party of Hillsborough County
  • School District of Hillsborough County
  • Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR)
  • Bayshore Patriots
  • Emerge Tampa Voice Segment
  • Carol Edwards Poll Worker Representative

"Each of us has a stake in working to continually improve our election process, as well as the number of our citizens who participate" said Mr. Johnson, who is also chairman of the GOTV committee.  "Here in Hillsborough County , one of our top priorities is to let all our citizens know as much about the process as possible, and to make registering and voting as convenient as possible. That is what this program, and most of our other community outreach programs, such as expanding the number of county libraries to be used for early voting, are all about."

Mr. Johnson added that while eligible citizens can register to vote throughout the year, August 7th is the deadline to register for the September 5 Primary Election and October 10th is the deadline to register for the November 7 General Election. "Your vote makes sure your voice is heard, and your choices known," said Mr. Johnson. "We want to do everything that we can to make sure Floridians do not miss this opportunity to help determine who will lead our state for the next four years."
